Damp stains to cover and top edge, some damp staining up to approximately 1/2 inch of top margin, pages separate and text unaffected Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson (December 24, 1809 - May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. The few paying jobs he had during his lifetime included mountain man (fur trapper), wilderness guide, Indian agent, and American Army officer. Carson became a frontier legend in his own lifetime via biographies and news articles. Exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels. In the 1840s, he was hired as a guide by John C. Fremont. Fremont's expedition covered much of California, Oregon, and the Great Basin area. Fremont mapped and wrote reports and commentaries on the Oregon Trail to assist and encourage westward-bound American pioneers. Carson achieved national fame through Fremont's accounts of his expeditions.Under Fremont's command, Carson participated in the uprising against Mexican rule in California at the beginning of the Mexican-American War. Later in the war, Carson was a scout and courier, celebrated for his rescue mission after the Battle of San Pasqual and for his coast-to-coast journey from California to Washington, DC to deliver news of the conflict in California to the U.S. government. During the American Civil War, Carson led a regiment of mostly Hispanic volunteers from New Mexico on the side of the Union at the Battle of Valverde in 1862.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Howard Simon (illustrator). 1st Edition. There are 488 pages in volume 1 and volume 2 is from 489 to 996 John C. Fremont hired him as a guide and hunter for his 1842 exploration expedition to the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. Carson was also Fremont's guide and hunter in Fremont's 1842 expedition to the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. Carson was also Frémont's guide on his second expedition (1843-1844), to California and Oregon; he again scouted and guided for him on his controversial 1845-1846 California expedition, which ended in filibustering and a court-martial for the so-called Pathfinder. Postage Kit Carson was considered a hero and President James K. Polk appointed him a lieutenant in the mounted rifles regiment. Kit Carson was becoming famous because Fremont praised him in his government reports. At one time Carson was ordered by Fremont to take no prisoners and shot and killed three noncombatant Californios at San Rafael.
