An important and particularly interesting wartime-era handbook on African American life, history, and social conditions, published at a time when questions of race, citizenship, education, employment, and social equality were receiving increasing national attention. Edwin R. Embree, a prominent educator and president of the Julius Rosenwald Fund, was deeply involved in efforts to document and improve the social and economic conditions of African Americans. This edition was specially issued for study groups, reflecting the period's growing use of organized discussion and adult education to address American racial issues. The book remains in its original paper wrappers, which are intact and show some staining and wear. The front/title page has some light smudging.
