Gray cloth rubbed and lightly soiled, spine head chipped with surface cloth loss descending 2cm adversely affecting title lettering. Edges toned; toning to endpapers as well as several initial and terminal leaves; past owner's ink signature on front free endpaper; t…op corner of pages 45-46 creased from past fold-down; occasional scattered spots of foxing to interior leaves which, overall, remain clean. Binding is firm. A good copy. Translated from the original Italian by Edward Storer with an Introduction by Sir Leonard Rogers. Italian journalist Paolo Zappa examines leprosy in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The publisher's "first published" statement is provided upon the copyright page with the title page featuring the London imprint of Lovat Dickson Limited. However the spine heel has "Arden" which is presumably New York's Arden Book Company. Thus this copy is likely an American first utilizing sheets from the British first edition.
