Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the future of the Pacific Islands and the indigenous population, commonly known as Kanakas, discussing the interests and responsibilities of the dominant civilized races in the region. The author argues that while civilized nations have a moral right to impose their dominance on less advanced races under specific conditions, they have an even greater responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of those they govern. The book delves into the history of colonialism in the Pacific, examining the impact of European arrival and settlement on the native population, with a particular focus on the devastating effects of forced labor systems. The author discusses the various interests of civilized races in the Pacific, such as agriculture, trade, mining, and strategic considerations. They emphasize the critical need for a balance between these interests and the welfare of the Kanaka people, exploring potential solutions such as improving labor conditions, promoting education, and ensuring fair trading practices. The book concludes by highlighting the significance of the Pacific Islands as a vital region where the ethical responsibilities of dominant races towards indigenous populations must be addressed and upheld. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the unique dual power structure instituted in the New Hebrides, a small group of islands located in the Pacific that was jointly administered by Britain and France from 1906 to the late 1970s, sharing responsibilities and coexisting in uneasy harmony under a single government for over 60 years. The author, writing in 1914, chronicles the difficulties inherent in this arrangement, the challenges faced by both the local population and the European settlers, and the complex interactions and tensions between the two colonising forces, which led to a remarkable experiment in international collaboration.
