Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 20+[IX plate] pages with map, diagrams and illustrations. Folio (14" x 11") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Reports of the explorations for the Museum 1904. Memoirs of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. Vol. III. No. I. First published in 1904. Thompson did early examinations and excavations of several sites in the Maya Puuc region, including Loltun and Labná; at the latter site publishing a monograph on the Maya underground storage containers known as chultunes. He also became the first explorer to find and excavate a small site he called X'Kichmook. With the help of Alison Armour, Thompson in 1894 purchased the plantation that included the site of Chichen Itza. He rebuilt the hacienda, which had been destroyed in the Caste War of Yucatán. For thirty years he explored the site, on behalf of the Field Columbian Museum, the American Antiquarian Society, the Peabody Museum at Harvard University and others. His discoveries included the earliest dated carving upon a lintel in the Temple of the Initial Series and the excavation of several graves in the Ossario (High Priest's Temple). Thompson is most famous for dredging the Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Cenote) from 1904 to 1911, where he recovered artifacts of gold, copper and carved jade, as well as the first-ever examples of what were believed to be pre-Columbian Maya cloth and wooden weapons. Thompson shipped the bulk of the artifacts to the Peabody Museum. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear else better than very good.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of extensive archeological excavations and surveys done at the Mayan ruins of Holmul, Guatemala. The author, an experienced archeologist, spent several years studying and excavating the site, which he believes to be of great importance to Mayan history and culture. The findings from Holmul are presented in detail, including descriptions of the site's architecture, ceramics, and minor objects. The author also provides an analysis of the site's architectural development, the chronological sequence of its ceramics, and a discussion of its cultural significance. This book adds to our understanding of Mayan culture and the development of one of the most important Mayan urban centers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
