Contact seller5-star sellerFair condition - needs to be re-cased. Probable first edition (per OCLC - two other competing imprints also issued in 1897). 586 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 19.25cm. No dust jacket. Original gray cloth soiled, rubbed, and stained; tears at frayed spine ends; board corners worn. Text block edges toned and soiled. Floral patte…rned pastedowns but missing both front and rear free endpapers; likely missing a front flyleaf or two as first leaf present is title/copyright; foxing and some soiling to interior leaves. Front and rear hinges quite shaken; several stress points to text block with several quires slightly pulled - book needs to be re-cased and sold as is. OCLC cites three 1897 editions - an Atlanta, GA imprint by H.C. Hudgins & Co. and two Richmond imprints by B.F. Johnson Publishing Co. and this Royal Publishing Company imprint. As the author was a Richmond, Virginia resident it is likely that the book was first published in Richmond but it is uncertain which Richmond publisher's edition has priority. Editor Robert A. Brock served with the 21st Virginia Infantry during the Civil War and served as secretary for the Virginia Historical Society as well as the Southern Historical Society. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4.75 pounds (2.15 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

Some wrinkling and wear to edges of jacket, contents clean and unmarked, as is buckram, generally a very g…ood copy. First published earlier in the same year, this is the first major collection of T. E. Lawrence's letters. E. M. Forster made the first attempt to gather a collection of Lawrence's correspondence, but the task grew too big and the planned volume was shelved. David Garnett took over the project, drawing on Forster's initial editorial plans to publish together Lawrence's wide-ranging letters, and includes correspondence between Lawrence and his mother, E. M. Forster, Thomas Hardy, Ronald Storrs, Eric Kennington, Liddell Hart, and David George Hogarth, the earliest dated August 1906 and the latest May 1935. This was the first and only major collection of letters until the supplementary title Home Letters of T. E. Lawrence and His Brothers was published in 1954.

A…N IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. The letters of T.E. Lawrence from 1906-1935, from early work in archaeology, through the Arab revolt, the writing of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and ending the year of his death in 1935. The ultimate aim of Garnett was to allow Lawrence to tell his own story, as much as possible. He has included Lawrence's private letters as well as official ones to give a complete portrayal of his life. Garnett took over this project when E.M. Forster felt "he could not go on with it" and thus was aided by his notes. The book is one of the finest sources for extensive information on T.E. Lawrence and the times he lived in and affected. Still the most important collection of T.E. Lawrence correspondence. O'Brien A202. Lawrence's interest in archaeology lasted from his childhood to the time of his death. These letters reflect this interest and his intellectual development over the years. Because Lawrence had many friends of diverse interest and background, his correspondence is complex and revealing. He was a very good correspondent and the substance of his writing "destroys the mystery of Larwence and establishes more firmly his titles to greatness--not only as a soldier and a writer--not because of what he did, but because of what he was." [dustjacket] Included are letters to Lloyd George, Bernard Shaw, Lady Astor, E.M. Forster, Noel Coward, Yeats, and Churchill.
