Hardcover. Condition: Good. Edith Farmiloe (illustrator). 1st Edition. Farmiloe wrote about and illustrated the lives of children living in her husband's parish in Soho, and later in South Hackney. A contemporary review described Chapel Street Children (1900) as "a book which will delight children of any age," adding that Farmiloe is "second to none in her delineations of Cockney gutter imps". Original dark blue cloth with gilt titles. Page edges gilt. Prize inscription on fron endpaper and attractive contemporary bookplate on free endpaper. Hinges cracked but binding tight. Wonderful sketches of small children obviously drawn from life.

Lucas from Elizabeth Turner's books for children first published in the first half of the 19th century. They teach various lessons such as, if girls and boys want a glass of beer they should ask for it politely, and don't eat unidentified red berries because it might kill you. Former owner's name stamped on front fixed endpaper: Mildred Beach. In Very Good+ Condition: back cover slightly soiled; light soiling on a few pages; otherwise, clean and tight.

One of the American plates shows Virginia 'Coons' and another Gipsies. Much of it would by Politically incorrect today.

Cr 4to. 336 pages plus 4 page book list at rear. First story is "In the Days of Chivalry". Covers are edge worn, spine and corners bumped and spine slightly darkened. Fingermarks to page margins. Small stick sticker to front pastedown. Small corner crease to one of the mounted plates. Packaged with care and promptly dispatched!
Condition: Fair. First edition (hardback). Oblong 4to (23cm by 32cm), 127pp, printed one side of the page only. Illustrated throughout in colour by the author. Original brown cloth spine, printed boards, with colour illustration to the front board. This copy is in tatty condition, with the binding shaken and loose, the inner hinges repaired, scribbling to the front board and the endpapers, and wear to the edges of the binding. Still a serviceable or readable copy with the contents generally clean.
