Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: As New. Near Fine. Another sterling examplar of the The Folio Society production standards, bound with red cloth over boards, gilt-lettered author name and title to spine, sharply and distinctly, and with beautiful gilt and black design to front cover. Map endpapers front and rear, previous owner's ink-stam…ped name inside both flaps. Housed in a simple, textured paper-covered slipcase that has done its job admirably. The Folio Society was founded in 1947 by Charles Ede, Christopher Sandford (of Golden Cockerel Press), and Alan Bott (founder of Pan Books), three presses that shared spaces and philosophies for a time until being incorporated in 1971 and then becoming an employee-owned trust in 2021. The Folio Society began as a membership-based book club but then expanded its range to publish multiple titles in fiction and non-fiction; science fiction and fantasy; biography and autobiography (from the publisher's web-site). Augmented with plentiful illustrations drawn from the British Library manuscript Cotton Nero E II, pt. 2 and Royal 20 c. viii, finely illuminated copies of the Grandes Chroniques of France probably dating from the last quarter of the 14th century. [6], 7-139 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. The Pastons: A Family in the Wars of the Roses By Richard Barber Published in London by The Folio Society, 1981 Description and Subject Matter A 1981 Folio Society edition of The Pastons: A Family in the Wars of the Roses, presented in as new condition, housed in its ori…ginal slipcase. The book itself is in excellent, as new condition, with clean decorated cloth boards, a tight binding, and a pristine, unmarked text block. The slipcase is in good condition, showing mild shelf wear consistent with careful storage. This compelling historical study explores the story of the Paston family, whose extensive surviving correspondence - the celebrated Paston Letters - provides one of the most vivid and detailed first-hand accounts of life in fifteenth-century England. Set during the turbulent period of the Wars of the Roses, the book reconstructs the family's social ambitions, property disputes, political loyalties, and daily domestic concerns as they navigated the dynastic struggles between the houses of York and Lancaster. Drawing on authentic contemporary letters, the work offers both an intimate portrait of late medieval family life and a broader insight into English society, governance, patronage networks, and social mobility during one of the most dramatic periods in English history. This finely produced Folio Society edition combines scholarly value with attractive design and strong shelf presence. An excellent copy for collectors of medieval history, English political history, and Folio Society publications.

He was a pioneer archaeologist, who recorded (often for the first time) numerous megalithic & other field monuments in southern England, & who is particularly noted for his systematic examination of the Avebury henge monument. The Aubrey holes at Stonehenge are named after him, although there is considerable doubt as to whether the holes that he observed are those that currently bear the name. He was also a pioneer folklorist, collecting together a miscellany of material on customs, traditions & beliefs under the title "Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme". He set out to compile county histories of both Wiltshire & Surrey, although both projects remained unfinished. His "Interpretation of Villare Anglicanum" (also unfinished) was the first attempt to compile a full-length study of English place-names. He had wider interests in applied mathematics & astronomy, & was friendly w/ many of the greatest scientists of the day. For much of the 19th & 20th centuries, thanks largely to the popularity of "Brief Lives", Aubrey was regarded as little more than an entertaining but quirky, eccentric & credulous gossip. Only in the 1970s did the full breadth & innovation of his scholarship begin to be more widely appreciated. He published little in his lifetime, & many of his most important manuscripts (for the most part preserved in the Bodleian Library) remain unpublished, or published only in partial form. -Wikipedia, where rich additional detail may be found * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for our posted below-cost additional fee of $12.00 & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations at our posted rates.
