BOOK RESUME: Ntiri and King are scholars in adult education, gender studies, and literacy research who bring forward the voices of women from varied global contexts to highlight how literacy is shaped by, and in turn shapes, gender dynamics. They are best known for Literacy as Gendered Discourse, that draws together empirical studies and theoretical reflections to examine how gender impacts literacy practices, access, and empowerment in different societies. The book gathers contributions from international scholars exploring literacy experiences of women in both developed and developing nations: urban African-American women, immigrant women, women in Africa, Latin America, and beyond. The volume addresses how literacy is not just a neutral skill but is deeply gendered: who has access, how literacy is valued, what literacy means in different contexts, and how literacy practices intersect with health, media, mentoring, beliefs, and community life. It includes case studies on health literacy, literacy sponsorship, immigrant womens transformative learning, nutrition literacy, and media literacy in the US, among others. Through this work, Literacy as Gendered Discourse brings womens otherwise marginalized literacy experiences into academic and policy conversations. It provides researchers, educators, and policymakers with insight into how gendered norms and power relations influence who learns, how they learn, and what literacy enables. It thus supports efforts toward more equitable literacy programs and educational policy that recognize gender as a central factor.
