The map endpapers at front show Bayou Boeuf above and below Lecompte, Louisiana , showing early property lines, plantation names and owners. The first half of the book is a mix of text and photographs, the last half is… mainly photo illustrations with captions. This is a local history of the village of Lecompte, a small town with no more than 400 people in the early 1890s. In its infancy, it was totally dependent on farming and plantation operations for existence, and a few cotton gins represented the only manufacturing. Some sawmills appeared and almost as quickly disappeared. But Lecompte was a crossroads where people came for purchase goods not available at the multitude of country stores nestled in every bend of the bayou . As a result, it was an interesting place.''
