This book delves into the diverse facets of agriculture in Jackson County, West Virginia, highlighting the complex relationship between land utilization and the economic and social well-being of its inhabitants. The book offers valuable insights into the interplay between soil conservation, erosion control, and farm productivity. It explores the impact of societal and economic factors on land management practices, emphasizing the need for a balance between agricultural production and environmental preservation. The author stresses the significance of sustainable farming techniques to safeguard the livelihoods of rural communities while protecting the delicate ecosystems upon which they depend. This timely study resonates with the ongoing global discussion on sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the economic impact of a conservation program that ran from 1935-1939 on various farm types in West Virginia. The author studied around 900 farms, concluding that the program resulted in reduced acreage devoted to crops and an increased focus on grazing land and pasture. Additionally, the use of soil-saving and fertility-enhancing practices such as contour tillage and liming became more common, leading to improved crop yields. The author contends that the success of such programs is highly influenced by social and industrial factors like income, which can sometimes lead to a tradeoff between resource exploitation and long-term conservation. Despite some evidence that cooperating farms had slightly lower incomes than non-cooperating farms, the author argues that conservation efforts can be economically feasible if sound business and farm management practices are also followed.
