Unlike West European faience and near-faience, which preceded the emergence of porcelain, and were the touchstone, so…to speak in the development of porcelain, Russian faience developed side by side with porcelain and even at times lagged behind. Proper faience factories came into being in Russia only at the beginning of the nineteenth century when the porcelain industry of Russia had such world-famous enterprises as Imperial Porcelain Factory of Gardner's factory at Verbilki. The fact that among the numerous nineteenth century faience factories there were a great number of factories and small enterprises in Gzhel which had previously produced majolica, and had mastered faience and near-faience in the nineteenth century, is very important for an understanding of the general development of Russian faience." - from the introduction.
