Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Fine unread condition charcoal boards, black spine, and red spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Special Thanks; Preliminary Page Quote by Chris Rock and Epilogue. "Hone…sty is not only the best policy ; it's also great comedy. And nobody dishes it out like Chris Rock. In Rock This! he unleashes his comedic talents and confronts all the hot-button issues: Finding a black leader, slavery vs. the Holocaust, addiction to bubble wrap, drugs. 'Crack is so addictive that if the new way to get high was to put it on a bullet, shoot it through a gun, and take a lick as it came out of the barrel, crackheads would try it. You'd see two guys, one holding the gun and the other with his tongue out.' *** Welfare, taxes, blacks vs. Jews, family life. 'These days everyone's got a gay family member. It's always been that way, but today it's more out in the open. I've got a gay uncle. We call him Aunt Tom.' *** The most racist people in the world, why white folks can't say the N-word, men's magazines. 'Sometimes you don't realize your mother has taken your stuff until it's too late. It's 3:00 in the morning, and your sexually explicit material is gone, just when you need it most. So you have to search the whole house for anything with a picture of a woman on it. Pretty soon you're at the pantry, staring at a box of Aunt Jemima.' *** Bad phone sex, the Dirty Socks Rule, beautiful women, how to get a rich man. 'There's lots of advice out there about how to get a man, but it's really simple. Put a pot on a stove every day at 6:00 p.m. A man will show up. Maybe more than one, from miles around.' *** "The swerve," The Friend Zone, marriage. 'Marriage is the roughest think in the world. Nelson Mandela endured 27 years in a South African prison, but once he got out, it only took 2 years before his marriage busted his ass.' *** Yakking wives, saying no to sex, the advantages of your wife having two husbands. 'The "other husband" type is not gay. But he's damn near. He likes to do what women like to do. And he cares. He really cares. I care only to appease my woman. He's the friend. He's really excited when our wife opens up the paper and shows him Kathie Lee Gifford's new house.' *** The Tossed Salad Man, why pimps are cool, Bill Clinton, sexual harassment, O.J. . 'If O.J. wasn't famous he'd be in jail right now. If O.J. drove a bus, he wouldn't even be O.J. He'd be "Orenthal, the Bus-Driving Murderer.' Rock THis! is controversial and thought provoking, and aways outrageously funny. You won't put it down." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Weaver, Victor (jacket design); Dyer, Alison (jacket photographs) (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: New. Born to a powerful family and educated at the prominent Mindröling Monastery, the Tibetan Buddhist nun and teacher Mingyur Peldrön (1699-1769) leveraged her privileged status and overcame significant adversity, including exile during a civil war, to play a central role in the reconstruction of her reli…gious community. Alison Melnick Dyer employs literary and historical analysis, centered on a biography written by the nun's disciple Gyurmé Ösel, to consider how privilege influences individual authority, how authoritative Buddhist women have negotiated their position in gendered contexts, and how the lives of historical Buddhist women are (and are not) memorialized by their communities. Mingyur Peldrön's story challenges the dominant paradigms of women in religious life and adds nuance to our ideas about the history of gendered engagement in religious institutions. Her example serves as a means for better understanding of how gender can be both masked and asserted in the search for authority-operations that have wider implications for religious and political developments in eighteenth-century Tibet. In its engagement with Tibetan history, this study also illuminates the relationships between the Geluk and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism from the eighteenth century, to the nonsectarian developments of the nineteenth century. The open access publication of this book was made possible by a grant from the James P. Geiss and Margaret Y. Hsu Foundation.DOI: 10.6069/9780295750378.

Paperback. Condition: New. Struggles for equality happen in all corners of the world. While social and economic justice movements are specific to their different national contexts, identities, and forms of oppression, collaboration and coalition building are required if we are to attain sustainable equality and healing justice.…Organizing Equality engages activist and scholarly debates about the organization of social and economic equality movements around the globe. The collection covers a myriad of issues, approaches, and experiences, forging a link between critical scholarly studies and journalistic and artistic works that offer more personal and hands-on perspectives. Moving from a broad discussion of resistance and solidarity, contributors examine case studies in their specific national contexts, such as movement building in Greece, caste politics in India, land struggles in Guatemala, student debt resistance movements in the United States, and the fight to indigenize higher education in Canada. Organizing Equality encourages understanding and collaboration between opposing views as a means of discovering new practices of seeing, learning, organizing, and being together in our movements for equality.
