Dunbar-Nasmith received the VC during the First World War and, in 1928, became the first submariner to reach flag rank. In the year after publication, he became captain of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. Promoted to vice-admiral in 1932, he was appointed commander-in-chief, East Indies, and during the Second World War, he served as Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches and then as flag officer in charge, London. Described by Time in 1941 as the "poet laureate" of the Royal Navy, Hopwood (1868-1949) concluded his career in 1919 at the rank of rear-admiral. Quarto. Colour frontispiece, illustrations in text.
