Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 285 pages. The United States finds itself at the center of a historically unparalleled empire, one that is wealth-generating and voluntary rather than imperialistic, say the authors of this compelling book. William E. Odom and Robert Dujarric examine America's unprecedented power within the international arenas of politics, economics, demographics, education, science, and culture. They argue persuasively that the major threat to this unique empire is ineffective U.S. leadership, not a rising rival power center. America cannot simply behave as an ordinary sovereign state, Odom and Dujarric contend. They describe the responsibilities that accompany staggering power advantages and explain that resorting to unilateralism makes sense only when it becomes necessary to overcome paralysis in multilateral organizations. The authors also offer insights into the importance of liberal international institutions as a source of power, why international cooperation pays, and why spreading democracy often inhibits the spread of constitutional order. If the United States uses its own power constructively, the authors conclude, the American empire will flourish for a long time. (SL#1/3).

Trade paperback. Presumed first edition/first printing. vii, [1], 156 p. One illustration. Abbreviations and Acronyms. Notes. Bibliography. The Project Director was Lt. Gen. William E. Odom. This book takes a clear-eyed look at the implications of Korean reunification for Northeast Asia and U.S. security policy in the region. The authors note that Korean reunification, or some sort of Korean peace treaty, is likely to occur in the coming decade, possibly very soon. A conference was held in Washington in November 1996 on the topic of Northeast Asia security and this contributed to the author's understanding and focus for this work. Korea was considered as the security pivot of Northeast Asia because of the likelihood of major change on the Korean peninsula. The central hypothesis of this study was that, over the next decade, the status quo would be profoundly altered by either unification, or a radical transformation of inter-Korean relations. The study contends that U.S. military disengagement would lead to regional instability. Very good. No dust jacket as issued.

Comes with archival-quality mylar dust jacket protector. Octavo, 340 pages, including index. Cream endpapers. "America's Inadvertent Empire" argues that U.S. dominance in the postCold War world was not the result of deliberate planning but rather the unintended outcome of historical, political, and economic forces, and examines the implications of American hegemony for global stability and U.S. foreign policy. William E. Odom (19322008) was a U.S. Army lieutenant general, former Director of the National Security Agency, and a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. Robert Dujarric is a policy analyst and author specializing in international security and Asian affairs. "America's Inadvertent Empire" is their collaborative study of U.S. global power in the early 21st century.
