Holland-backed boards, small 4to, xxxvi, 200 pp. "In his introduction, Duff surveys the book trade between the invention of printing to 1557. Printing came relatively late to England. In 1485, Peter Actors was appointed King's Stationer, but no King's Printer was named. The book trade grew slowly, and foreigners dominated book-s…elling in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. In 1554, Parliament limited the rights of foreigners engaged in the book trade, and England tried to restrict the importation of foreign books as well. The volume presents biographies of those engaged in the trade and cites references for further study. Appendix II lists the signs of London booksellers; these include the Bishop's Head in St. Paul's Churchyard, the Mermaid in Lombard Street, and the Saracen's Head at Holborn. An important study." - Rosenblum. Boards somewhat browned, free endpapers darkened, otherwise a Near Very Good unopened copy.

Edition of 600 copies. Quarter-linen and boards, top edge gilt, 4to, 29 cm, ix, 136 pp, LIII leaves of plates. Esdaile wrote: " 'Fifteenth Century English Books' is an exhaustive series of standard descriptions under authors or titles, followed by facsimiles and a short-title list in "Proctor-order". It is as final as any biblio…graphy can well be - which is not saying much, when your subject-matter keeps growing, that being indeed part of the pleasure of the sport. It records 431 books, two-thirds at least of which are in the English language in whole or in part, except the small academic output of the Oxford press, only one book from which, a Latin grammar, contains any vernacular. Nearly half the books are known from unique copies or from fragments, and during the twenty odd years of Mr Duff's searching he states that no less than fifty-four new books or sheets came to light. " Covers somewhat marked, rear board with two cent-sized spots and slight wear, endpapers slightly foxed, contents agetoned.
