Wonderful pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Roland Duvernet; front and rear panels reta…in fairly bright color but with slight sunning to spine; 2cm deep chipping at spine head; other chipping, tears, and creasing; long 10cm tear at front panel's lower spine fold; some soiling to front panel's text area; foxing/toing to flaps; front flap retains publisher's printed price at top right; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Red cloth; dark navy blue lettering to spine and front board. Foxing to text block's top edge; minor wear to fore-edges of several rear leaves. Toning/foxing to endpapers; initial leaves have light creasing at their top corners; slight interior foxing but pages overall remain clean. Binding is firm. Still an attractive copy for wartime rationing adversely affected the quality of the book's production particularly in regards to its thin paper dj which usually is not present at all - a very good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket. Compiled by Louisiana Writers' Project State Director Lyle Saxon, Assistant State Director Edward Dreyer, and Special Writer Robert Tallant from material gathered by the Louisiana Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration, GUMBO YA-YA features drawings within the text by Caroline Durieux (misspelled as "Durifux" within the frontispiece, this being an additional first printing point) with additional decorations by Roland Duvernet plus: illustrated front endpapers (rear endpapers are blank); a Preface by Saxon, Dreyer, and Tallant; b/w photographs by various cited and uncited contributors; three appendices reviewing New Orleans superstitions, colloquialisms, and customs; and Index. The copyright page (page iv) notes the book's inclusion among "Louisiana Writers Project Publications" but, near the bottom of the page, appears the typographical error "Works Project Administration" (the book was among the last official publications under the auspices of the Work Projects Administration as its formal operations ended in 1943).
