Her life and her works by Lady Victoria Manners and Dr. G. C. Williamson Summary: Angelica Kauffmann, R.A.: Her Life and Her Works (1924), by Lady Victoria Manners and Dr. G. C. Williamson, is one of…the classic early biographies of the celebrated Swiss-born Neoclassical painter Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), a founding member of the Royal Academy in London. The book was especially significant because it drew upon a previously untranslated manuscript written by Kauffmann herself, discovered in the Royal Academy archives, allowing the authors to clarify the attribution and chronology of many of her paintings. The book traces Kauffmann's remarkable career from her childhood in Switzerland, where she was trained by her father, the painter Johann Joseph Kauffmann. Gifted in both music and art, she ultimately chose painting and quickly established herself as one of Europe's most accomplished portraitists and history painters. The authors describe her travels through Italy, where she absorbed classical art and associated with leading intellectuals. Her move to London in 1766 marked the high point of her British career. There she became a favourite portrait painter among aristocratic patrons and was one of only two women admitted as founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 268 pages (complete). Angelica Kauffmann, an Austrian who helped found the Royal Academy, painted works that one would like to hang in one's house. Her neo-classicism was unobtrusive and gentle. This book written by Victoria Manners (the sister of the utterly beautiful Diana Co…oper and was Marchioness of Anglesey through marrying the 6th Marquess, who in turn was the successor and cousin of the legendary 'dancing peer' - the outrageous 5th Marquess). The cover of this large and generous book is much stained and worn. It is benign and sure. The contents are wonderfully gentle, genteel and attractive. The pages are of thick handmade paper. They are very clean, clear, attractive, tidy, neat, certain, diligent and comfortable. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
