A handsome set. "When a life of pleasant labour is drawing to a close, the wish naturally asserts itself to gather together the main results, and to combine them in a well-defined and harmonious picture which may be left as a legacy to succeeding generations." But not to the students and staff of Bristol University, it seems.

Front hinge on volume one is a bit loose and top two inches of the paper and webbing has split on the interior. Black endpapers. Burgandy color, embossed boa…rds with bright gold lettering on the spines. Volume I has a 1/4" splash of, perhaps, tea near the fore edge of the half title page. Volume I has a 1/4" tear at the fore edge of the rear endpaper. A very nice looking, matching set.

The publisher details at feet of spines somewhat dulled, rear board of volume 1 dulled after partial restoration of, presumably, damp bleaching.Slight foxing spotting to page edges with a very few leaves at adjacent to endpapers slightly browned. Volume 2 largely uncut, top edges of Vol.1 show no signs of incompetent cutting. Inscribed to Charles Pearce Esq. by William H.Holt, Christmas '84. An attractive, sound, hardly-used set.
