People of Importance by J.?H. Dowd (with text by Brenda E. Spender) is a charming, gently satirical illustrated book from the mid?1930s, best understood as a companion to Dowd and Spender's earlier Important People. The core of the work is Dowd's expressive black?and?white drawings paired with Spender's light, observant prose. Together they create a humorous portrait gallery of "important" figures?usually children, sometimes animals with human traits, always rendered with Dowd's distinctive blend of affection and sly social commentary.
