No dust jacket. Library sticker on front cover.Medium green cloth 8vo with green leather quarter binding, bordered with simple gilt borders. Gilt lettering and simple gilt border on sun faded backstrip. Backstrip has some chipping to ends and a couple of small tears in seams. Bumped corners and some general wear and fraying. Front hinge split. Hinges are secured with clear tape. Marbled end papers. Frontispiece. Interior is secure and clear of markings save for some foxing and a little grubbiness in places. The first edition and first publication of the original letters. Uniformly rebound in full cloth binding with red title plates. The complete three volume set. This set was later followed by a four-volume 'Concluding Series'. With an engraved frontispiece in volume one. A collection of the letters of Horace Walpole, the English writer, art historian and Whig politician, to Sir Horace Mann, British Envoy at the Court of Tuscany. Walpole is best known for his Gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto'. His letters have gained popularity and are of social and political interest. Edited by Lord Dover. In full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelf wear. Fading to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Binding slightly worn to the centres of volume two and three, but still very firm. Pages very bright and clean with the odd spot and the occasional mark. Foxing to the frontispiece in volume one, and some offsetting to the surrounding pages as a result. Some small tears around the binding in volume two. Near Fine. book.
