Dopo gli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta delle lotte per i diritti civili - cui Dowd partecipa sin dai tempi dei campus universitari -, e le politiche socio-economiche e i cambiamenti legislativi per migliorare l'esistenza di classi e generazioni; dopo gli altrettanto ricchi e difficili anni Settanta, con la fine della guerra in Vietnam, per la quale l'autore si impegna in prima persona, negli Ottanta comincerà un profondo mutamento delle politiche economiche americane. Neppure presidenti come Clinton e Obama saranno in grado di imprimere un cambiamento di rotta. E due sono gli errori fondamentali che Dowd imputa alla sua nazione: aver incoraggiato l'innato egoismo della natura umana, trasformandolo in un'avidità senza fondo; e aver permesso che il razzismo continuasse a radicarsi nella società.
