Leather. Condition: Fair. 1476p OT; 415 NT; color maps. A flexible hardcover book bound in black leather and encased in a bonded leather dustwrapper. Good condition overall. Front endpapers and first several pages are dampstained at the top. Scribbled-out owner's inscription at top of title page. Scattered highlighting and underlining, mostly in the New Testament. Some torn page margins where the section tabs were handled roughly. The binding is still tight, despite some wear in the gutters of the endpapers. A much-used but nicely readable copy. Vintage Douay-Rheims Bible with protruding section tabs. This edition contains the now-obscure 1935 James Carey revision of the New Testament (which would be replaced in 1941 by the Confraternity translation). Measures approx. 7" x 4.75". The family record section has not been filled out.

Mounted red leather and gilt spine label. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CATHOLIC BIBLE TO BE PUBLISHED IN A SINGLE VOLUME FOLIO. The complete Bible containing the Challoner-MacMahon revised text. In excellent condition for its age. There is almost no foxing, spotting or soiling in text; no tears; no wrinkling. The two "Admonition" pages after titlepage are loose but still attached.) No owner marks. There are 10 fullpage steel engravings (on rectos only) engraved by Parker, Schiavonette, Bartolozzi, Raphael, others. (It does appear that one plate has been removed at p. 25) All plates are lightly foxed. Hinges not cracked in or out . Cover extreme tips have leather worn off and spine ends are worn down somewhat. This was a Bible that clearly was used with great care and respect. It is housed in a contemporary hand-sewn linen jacket with hand-embroidered "Holy Bible" on front panel (although quite aged, this cover is in good condition with just two small chips along one outer hinge and a closed 3 inch tear along top spine end. Good condition. Binding nice and solid. Very Scarce. Pictures available on request.
