No Binding. Archive of original Antarctic material by Wakefield Dort, Jr., a professor of geology at the University of Kansas, drawn from three separate trips to Antarctica in 1965-66, 1966-67, and 1970, as a member of the U.S. Antarctic Expeditions under the auspices of the United States Antarctic Research Project (USARP). The…collection includes four highly detailed journals, all entirely concerned with his time on the Antarctic continent, each with between sixty and ninety pages of entries describing both his scientific field work and observations, with occasional diagrams and sketches, while also serving as his personal travel journals for his three trips. In addition, the archive includes approximately 200 original photographs, more than 20 of which are in color, and about half of the approximately from these trips, with the rest consisting of Polaroid prints captured through a microscope of varying dates. All images quite clear and sharp, with some of the photos likely printed in the decades following the trips. Mount Dort, near McMurdo Sound, was named after Professor Dort for his work in the Antarctic, and in 1981 he published the somewhat unusual academic paper "The Mummified Seals of Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica" in Terrestrial Biology, describing the phenomenon of seemingly out of place mummified seal carcasses in the McMurdo Dry Valleys; included among the photographs is an image of one such mummified seal. An excellent polar archive, with all the material present related to scientific work in Antarctica. Signed by Author(s).
