Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the fascinating origins and service of the USS Monitor, a groundbreaking ironclad warship that played a pivotal role in the American Civil War. Its inventor, John Ericsson, a brilliant Swedish engineer, designed the Monitor as a response to the Confederate ironclad Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack). The book vividly captures the challenges Ericsson faced in overcoming skepticism and securing funding for his revolutionary vessel, and the Monitor's subsequent dramatic battle with the Virginia, which redefined naval warfare. The author provides a deep dive into the design, construction, and performance of the Monitor, exploring its innovative features and the remarkable courage of its crew. Through these accounts, the book not only sheds light on a crucial moment in maritime history but also celebrates the ingenuity and determination that shaped the course of the Civil War. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
