Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. The concluding Explorations volume of Olive Beaupre Miller's ambitious illustrated history for younger readers, treating the discovery and civilizations of the Americas through sections including Land in the West, Ancient America, The Brilliant Civilization of the Mayas, The Conquest of Mexico, The Indians of the Southwest, and Peruvian and Other Explorations. Subjects include Viking exploration, early cartography, Maya and Aztec civilizations, Chichen Itza, Pueblo peoples and Acoma, the Inca world, and the Spanish conquest. The series was conceived as an unusually visual approach to history; a contemporary antiquarian description of the earlier issue notes its four-color lithographic illustrations throughout and illustrated endleaves. The visual program is particularly noteworthy. Donn P. Crane is associated with the series' color illustration work, while the spectacular double-page endpaper panorama is attributable to Mariel Wilhoite, another Book House artist and designer. Executed in black, turquoise, orange, cream and gold, the endpapers progress from ancient and Indigenous structures through monumental architecture to a soaring modern skyscraper metropolis pierced by searchlights. The mounted front-cover illustration provides yet another identifiable artistic contribution and is visibly signed Maurice Freiberger. Thus this volume preserves work by three identifiable visual contributors. Copyright page states "Copyright 1933, 1935 The Bookhouse for Children." This is the 1935 eight-volume issue/edition, rather than the original four-volume My Book of History configuration, published in 1929. Condition: Very Good. No dust jacket. Original green textured publisher's binding with intentionally applied pale/white striated decorative treatment across the boards. Mounted color pictorial panel to front board remains striking, with some genuine rubbing/surface wear to the illustration; gilt spine lettering remains strong. Binding remains sound. Interior generally clean and attractive with excellent color retention. Previous owner's name "Lee Norwood" written discreetly along the upper front pastedown/endpaper area. Several leaves exhibit localized old moisture/tide staining at the upper margins, generally remaining clear of the printed text and illustrations. Olive Beaupre Miller (1883-1968) was an American writer, editor and children's book publisher who graduated from Smith College in 1904 and founded The Book House for Children in 1919. Her My Book House project was conceived as a progressively graded library in which literature became more sophisticated as the child matured. Her company was also unusual for its era in employing a largely female staff and an all-women sales force. Miller began A Picturesque Tale of Progress in 1929 as a similarly ambitious attempt to make world history visually accessible to younger readers. The Book House for Children was eventually sold to United Educators in 1954. Donn P. Crane, Mariel Wilhoite and Maurice Freiberger (illustrator).

Bound in black cloth with the title and spine decorations gold-stamped. The color pastedowns on the front covers are bright with no scuffs, no scratches. Typically volume 1 In the Nursery is in bad condition from over use and mothers allowing baby to play with the book. This is NOT the case with this set. All six volumes in fine to near fine condition. Only fault is the lower fore-edge corners of 10 pages (leaves) of vol 1 are torn away. This does not affect the text on those pages. Pages are tight and clean with no marks. no scribbles, no crayon. No name of previous owner. No musty odor. no water damage. No soiling. No sun fading. A nice set of this classic work for children.
