Di alcuni di loro si approfondiscono le biografie, i tempi e i luoghi dell'emigrazione e dell'arrivo al fronte, e si seguono le vicende successive alla guerra civile. Una attenzione particolare è rivolta proprio ai luoghi attraversati, talvolta luoghi di confino o di contenimento, che diventarono anche spazio dove progettare un futuro diverso. Le biografie sono accomunate dal legame con la città di Venezia e da un retroterra sociale, culturale e politico che giocò un ruolo decisivo nella scelta di lasciare la propria casa e i propri affetti per imbracciare le armi. L'ultimo capitolo è dedicato a Silvio Trentin, che non combatté sul campo ma spese tutte le sue forze in favore della causa repubblicana spagnola: la sua libreria di Tolosa divenne una sorta di "ambasciata", centro di smistamento e collegamento dei volontari italiani e stranieri accorsi per recarsi al fronte e riferimento per i leader dei vari partiti antifascisti.
