No le han faltado nunca a Cádiz eruditos e investigadores que han dado a la imprenta obras de interés, rápidamente agotadas. En un momento como el presente en que la divulgación histórica amplía sin cesar su público, estos libros contraponen a los antiguos tratados, el interés histórico que tienen en si mismos, tanto por su recopilación de datos, como por el tratamiento que de ellos hacen en lo que se refleja una forma de pensar que también interesa conocer. Por ello, la "Historia de Adolfo de Castro" no tiene validez sólo como síntesis de documentación del pasado, sino como expresión de la manera en que un hombre de letras decimonónico veía su historia pasada, y esta visión tiene mayor interés cuando se trata de un autor que unía el ejercicio de las letras, el de la política y la administración activa.
