Un art paradoxal se proposait d'examiner les conditions de possibilité de « l'entrée en art… » de la photographie, autour des années soixante-dix, et constituait le medium photographique comme l'un des plus puissants opérateurs de déconstruction du modernisme, Photographie Plasticienne : l'extrême contemporain se donne pour enjeu l'examen attentif des différents pôles photographiques, souvent contradictoires, de ce qui serait « l'après post-modernisme », emblématisé par les années quatre-vingt-dix : les tropes du banal et de l'intime, la photographie érudite ; l'esthétique de l'idiotie, le sérieux de l'objectivisme issu de l'école de Düsseldorf ; les fictions prométhéennes du post-humain, le renouveau de plus en plus affirmé d'une photographie documentaire qui ne doit plus rien à un photojournalisme frappé d'obsolescence, mais peut a contrario se comprendre en écho aux stratégies iconiques du « retrait ». Dans un champ photographique éclaté, qu'il serait illusoire de vouloir unifier au détriment des différences et des fractures, l'auteure a conjointement mis en exergue les questionnements propres à l'extrême contemporain : soit l'impossibilité du paysage et la crise de l'urbanité, l'émergence de «non-lieux» et la tentative pour inventer des lieux où vivre, d'une part ; l'inquiétude du sujet vis-à-vis de lui-même, d'autre part, comme si le portrait, loin d'être une évidence, achoppait sur une identité toujours plus précaire, qui fut déjà soumise à l'implacable déconstruction structuraliste du sujet.
