William Napier was the brother of the militarily more famous General Sir Charles, who made his reputation in India and is probably best known for his conquest of the province of Scinde. William, who like his brother did well in the Peninsular War, made his name as the author of the six-volume history War in the Peninsula and this is Dobsonâs abridged version. As he says in the introduction it has been his aim to give an account of only the principal events of this long and bitterly fought campaign, paying tribute to Napierâs âmasterpiece of detailed military history.â.

Some pages uncut throughout with tears to some page edges. Minor dog-eared corners. Previous owner's inscriptions to front free endpapers. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Splits to spine ends causing cloth to be frayed. Wear marks overall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is a UK hardcover published by Bickers & Son in 1889. I'm unsure if it's the first edition or a reprint in the same year as the first edition - there's a couple online bound differently. The books is in Very Good condition with straight spine, sharp corners and softened spine ends, in attractive gilt emblemed boards, and gilt edged pages. The binding is tight and the book contains ten illustrations in permanent photography. The title page confirms the 1889 publication by Bickers & Son.
