Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928) is, samen met Christiaan Huygens, Nederlands grootste natuurkundige. Geboren in Arnhem, waar hij in splendid isolation het elektron bedacht, werd hij op 24-jarige leeftijd hoogleraar theoretische natuurkunde in Leiden. Na zijn Nobelprijs van 1902 groeide Lorentz uit tot internationale coryfee. Zijn elektronentheorie stond op gelijke hoogte met Einsteins relativiteitstheorie. Met zijn diepe inzicht, innemende karakter, tact en talenkennis was Lorentz de ideale voorzitter van de wereldberoemde Solvay Raden in Brussel. Diezelfde gaven benutte hij in en na de Eerste Wereldoorlog als onvermoeibaar verzoener. Lorentz, begenadigd popularisator, was getuige van de revolutionaire overgang van klassieke naar moderne natuurkunde. Als voorzitter van de Zuiderzeecommissie rekende hij persoonlijk de loop van de Afsluitdijk uit. En in de internationale commissie voor intellectuele samenwerking, de voorloper van Unesco, diende hij de wereldvrede. Lorentz.
