This book is a record of that exhibit and what it represented. Van oudsher zijn de priestergewaden bij uitstek de objecten waaraan in een kerk de meeste aandacht en het meeste geld werd besteed. Ze waren, en zijn nog steeds vaak, van een oogverblindende en hemelse schoonheid. Toen het voortbestaan van de katholieke kerk tijdens de Republiek bedreigd werd en katholieke schuilkerken niet herkenbaar mochten zijn vanaf de straat, werd aan de binnenkant gecompenseerd wat aan de buitenkant niet getoond mocht worden. In de zeventiende eeuw werden de gewaden gouden, zilveren en zijden uitingen van stil verzet, maar ook van een feministische agenda van de makers. Maar in de achttiende eeuw werd alles anders: toen werden priestergewaden gemaakt van peperdure baljurken. Het kon dus zomaar voorkomen dat een priester in een roze gewaad met bloemetjes aan het altaar stond.
