Condition: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1942). SB. v + 143pp, 4 colour plates. Japanese armed forces entered the Second World War with the attack on Pearl Harbour in the Pacific Ocean on 7 December, 1941. Almost simultaneously Japanese land forces invaded the Malayan peninsula, sweeping southwards towards Singapore. Although the attacks were shrouded in initial secrecy, both American and British Intelligence had studied the Japanese forces, and this is one of the resulting publications. The pamphlet is a very rare item, and is reprinted because of both its rarity and importance.General Headquarters India issued it in March 1942, and it covers the Japanese Army and, to a lesser degree, the Japanese Air Force. As with all military intelligence publications the pamphlet starts with an overview of the subject, in this case the political influence of the Japanese Army, which was considerable. There follows a detailed examination of the organisation of the Army and its administration. Chapters on infantry, cavalry, artillery, armoured fighting vehicles and airborne troops are accompanied by descriptions of Japanese engineer and service troops. There are also descriptions of chemical warfare, tactics (all forms), and the fifth column, so important in the campaign in Malaya. There are tables and coloured plates to illustrate the pamphlet, and line drawings of Japanese tanks and their flags, together with some contemporary photographs of Japanese troops in action.

Wraps. Condition: Good. Bresumed first printing of this issue. Quarto, 90 pages, wraps, index, Name on the front cover. This bibliography is the 35th in a continuing series on Soviet laser developments. The coverage includes basic research on solid state, liquid, gas, and chemical lasers; components; nonlinear optics; spectroscopy of laser materials; ultrashort pulse generation; theoretical aspects of advanced lasers; and general laser theory. Laser applications are listed under communications; beam propagation; computer technology; holography; laser-induced chemical reactions; measurement of laser parameters; laser measurement applications; laser-excited optical effects; beam-target interaction; and plasma generation and diagnostics. Soviet laser development, initiated in the mid-1960s, focused heavily on military, industrial, and specialized space applications, often aiming to disrupt, blind, or dazzle rather than just destroy. Major projects included the Terra-3 facility at Sary Shagan for anti-satellite research, the 1K17 Szhatie laser tank for optical-electronic warfare, and early space-based laser initiatives like the Polyus/Skif-DM prototype. Key aspects of Soviet laser programs included:Weapon Development (1960s1980s): The USSR invested heavily in high-energy lasers to counter US space systems and ground armor. Notable projects included the "Terra-3" anti-satellite laser site in Kazakhstan and the 1K17 Szhatie, which used a battery of laser projectors to disable enemy sensor equipment.Space-Based Lasers: In the 1980s, the Soviets developed lasers for orbital combat, including a specialized laser pistol for cosmonauts designed to blind sensors on enemy spacecraft. The 1987 Polyus/Skif-DM payload was intended as a test for future military space stations.Tactical Laser Tanks: The Soviet Union developed functional, secret laser-equipped vehicles, such as the 1K17 Szhatie and the 1K11 Stilet, designed to destroy or dazzle the optics of enemy tanks and helicopters. By the early 1970s, the Soviets were developing and applying (CO_{2}) lasers for industrial applications like welding and cutting, with capabilities roughly similar to Western technology at the time. Soviet scientists, particularly those at the Astrofizika association, pioneered research into selective laser chemistry and, according to a RAND report, made significant theoretical contributions to free-electron lasers. While the Soviet Union built advanced prototypes, many projects were canceled or stalled due to the high cost and the dissolution of the USSR.
