Denis Petau (1583-1652) was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the best-known scholars of his age, producing works in the fields of chronology, history, philosophy, polemics, patristics, and the history of Christianity. This work is a summary of a larger work he published in 1628, entitled Tabulae chronolgicae. That work was developed alongside of his vast, but unfinished, De theologicis dogmatibus, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of christiana doctrine from an historical point of view. For many years he was professor of divinity at the College de Clermont, the chief Jesuit establishment in Paris. At sixty years of age he stopped teaching, but retained his office of librarian and consecrated the rest of his life to this work, popularly known as the "Dogmata theologica". The first three volumes first appeared in 1644; the last two volumes were published in 1650, but even these left the work unfinished.
