Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Volume 1 explores the history and development of furniture in the Louvre from the medieval period through the 19th century, emphasizing furniture made by ébénistes (cabinetmakers specializing in veneered and luxury furniture). The key themes are. Key themes: ? Historical evolution of French furniture design from medieval craftsmanship to highly refined royal and aristocratic furniture traditions. ? Examination of major decorative styles, especially French furniture of the Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI periods. ? Focus on celebrated master cabinetmakers including: o André-Charles Boulle o Charles Cressent o Jean-François Oeben o Jean-Henri Riesener o Martin Carlin ? Analysis of luxury techniques such as: o Marquetry o Gilt bronze mounts o Lacquer work o Exotic woods o Porcelain and pietra dura decoration ? A history of how the Louvre's furniture collection developed, including royal inheritances and later acquisitions. The book argues that French furniture represented a peak of artistic innovation and "art de vivre" (the French art of living), especially in the 18th century. Volume 2: Chairs and Consoles (Menuiserie), 17th and 18th Centuries The volume concentrates on furniture made by menuisiers (joiners), especially seating furniture and carved wooden pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The key themes of this volume are the study of Armchairs. Side chairs. Stools. Consoles and carved and wooden furnishing. ? Attention to construction methods, carving techniques, upholstery traditions, and stylistic changes across French court culture. ? Exploration of how furniture reflected changing tastes, social customs, and interior design in aristocratic France. ? Demonstrates distinctions between the work of menuisiers (structural woodworkers) and ébénistes (luxury cabinetmakers). Overall significance Together, the two volumes function as both an art-history reference and a visual catalogue of nearly 200 important furniture masterpieces from the Louvre collection, richly illustrated with detailed photography. Both editions have been printed as follows: "Three Thousand Eight Hundred Cloth-Bound Copies - Three Thousand in French and Eight Hundred in English - In a Paper Covered Slipcase". - The Finest Collection in the World, Of all the important collections of furniture exhibited in Paris or Versailles, in New York or other capital cities, that of the Louvre is indisputably the richest and most admired. Since inheriting the French Royal Collections, it has been enriched regularly by the addition of objects commensurate with its prestigious origins, in accordance with a very selective acquisitions policy. This furniture is the expression of an art in which in the past, and especially in the 18th century, French influence reigned supreme. Indeed, the best foreign craftsmen came to Paris to participate in the creation of masterpieces. Throughout that century, successive styles demonstrated the capacity for invention and renewal which is typical of French genius. The art of furniture-making was one element in an art de vivre which was then at its highest point. Previously unpublished: This collection has never before been the subject of such an important work. Its publication has required contributions from qualified art historians and compilation of a large quantity of very high quality illustrations. The work was conceived - and for the most part written - by the keepers of the Department des Objects D'art responsible for the furniture section of the Louvre Museum. It is dived into two volumes. Volume I includes a brief history of the collection and, for each period or style, an analysis of the furniture made by ebenistes (cabinet-makers), each style is presented in a separate chapter centred around the most representative craftsman - Boulle, Crescent, B.V.R.B., Oeben, Riesener, Martin Carlin. Volume II is devoted to 17th and 18th century furniture made by by menuisiers (joiners) - mainly seats. It has taken a whole year to prepare the illustrations. The photographs were taken with great skill under the most appropriate conditions. Nearly 200 masterpiece are presented, each with an overall view and with photographs of details, all of extremely high technical and artistic quality. The publisher's aim has been to provide a complete and exact image of this incomparable collection in a de luxe edition which does justice to its splendour. This publication won the Marc de Beauvau Craon Prize 1993. These incredible books are truly a work of art, just like the subject itself.
