And those years made a deeper spiritual impression upon him than all his years in America. There, in the little Spanish town of Avila, he was able to enjoy the spiritual solitude that has (illustrator). In this fascinating autobiographical volume, George Santayana, famous philosopher, and author of The Last Puritan, brings together the threads of his background to give a charming yet profound picture of the various people and places that have formed his character ad made him the man he has become. "My mother," he says, "always spoke contemptuously of lovemaking and match-making: yet she herself was twice married, and not by any simple concatenation of circumstances but in spite of serious obstacles. Passion may inspire determination in a Romeo and Juliet; in my mother I think determination rather took passion's place." Her first marriage, in the Philippines, to George Sturgis of Boston, took place on a British man-of-war, as the vessel's captain was the only man who could be found to marry a Spanish Catholic to an American Unitarian. It was this marriage that took her to America, where she lived most of her life in or near Boston. And it was indirectly through this marriage that George, only child of her second marriage, came to know the Sturgis Clan- Russell, the "Great Merchant," James of the many business failures and the uncompromisingly round beard, and Uncle Samuel who was "so elegantly mad." So half of little George's life was spent in Boston, and his picture of the Boston of that day, of its commercial expansion and spiritual shrinking, is deftly, humorously and tenderly drawn. The greater part of his school life and, later, his college life, was in America; but of all these years, it was the eleven years he spent at Harvard as student, instructor and proctor, that were the happiest. Living in an atmosphere of physical austerity and mental luxury, his mind was provoked and stimulated by close contact with other similarly endowed minds. His re-creation of the Harvard he knew is exquisitely nostalgic, but is without a hint of sentimentality. Yet is was in Spain, during the years he spent in the house of his father, a gentle, thoughtful man, classicist, lawyer and painter, marked by "the Spanish dignity in humility," that he was most truly at home. And those years made a deeper spiritual impression upon him than all of his years in America. There, in the little Spanish town of Avila, he was able to enjoy the spiritual solitude that has always been his greatest need. There too the simplicity of living, the emphasis so differently placed than in America, was most congenial to him. As he grew older, he managed a synthesis of these two widely varying backgrounds: the American-Protestant, materialistic, complex; the Spanish- Catholic, spiritual, austere. From each he took what it had to give him. It was this diversity, however, that predetermined his way of life. "Fixity of tradition, of custom, of language is perhaps a prerequisite to complete harmony in life and mind," he says. "Variety I these matters is a lesson to the philosopher and drives him into the cold arms of reason; but it confuses the poet and the saint, and embitters society.".
