Revised, enlarged edition, with reclassification, by R. A. Paroz. New edition, using the 1959 Republic of South Africa orthography. 8vo; original red cloth, with title blocked in black on spine and upper board; pp. xx + 598 + adverts. Merest trace of sunning and a few spots to cloth; edges foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good to very good condition. (Murphy & Goff 1057; Doke Collection, p. 140) "The first person who succeeded in getting a list of Southern Sotho words published was the Rev. A. Mabille. His biographers tell us how he had begun to draft a list of Sotho words found in the New Testament while on the ship Hero, during his long and tedious first journey to South Africa. Mrs Mabille, née Casalis, the pioneer's daughter, had lost no time in teaching her husband what she could, and not without success, for on arrival in Cape Town and a few weeks later in Basutoland, he was able to make himself understood by the Basotho, who were thrilled at hearing such a youthful missionary, fresh from overseas, talk to them, clumsily no doubt, but in their own language. This eighth edition has been prepared at Thabana-Morena, on a fairly isolated mission station, away from the Morija press and its qualified staff." - Introduction.
