El Tratado único y singular del origen de los indios occidentales del Perú, México, Santa Fe y Chile, de Diego Andrés Rocha es, junto con la obra de Fray Gregorio García, uno de los compendios más completos del siglo XVII acerca de la cuestión más candente y polémica, entonces como ahora, la de conocer de dónde y cómo vinieron a poblarse las Indias antes de que llegasen a descubrirlas los españoles a partir de 1492. En ese sentido, puede decirse que Diego Andrés Rocha fue un ingenuo erudito que acumuló los saberes de un sinnúmero de otros autores como Vespucio, Anglería, Fernández de Oviedo, Betanzos, López de Gómara, Cieza, Zárate, Las Casas, Ercilla, Cabello de Balboa, Acosta, Dávila, Vargas Machuca, Herrera, Torquemada, Calancha, y sobre todo Gregorio García, a quien sigue muy de cerca. Como dice Sánchez Alonso, Diego Andrés Rocha pone al servicio de su hallazgo, por el que muestra una ingenua satisfacción, la erudición que tiene a su alcance, exponiendo primero las opiniones distintas que había y después todos los textos y componentes de la suya . La mayor parte de libro de Diego Andrés Rocha está dedicado a presentar y defender dos tesis muy diferentes entre sí: la de que los indígenas americanos descendían de los españoles y la que señala a las diez tribus perdidas de Israel como las que dieron origen a la población del Nuevo mundo. La primera de esta tesis ?tan singular por otra parte? sólo se explica si tenemos en cuenta la necesidad de hallar títulos suficientes que justificasen la posesión de aquellas tierras por parte de los españoles. Ante el Papa y ante el mundo de la época era necesario hallar justos títulos para tal hecho. Esta peregrina teoría vendría así a apoyar la tesis hispanista. LIBRO.
