In der Zwischenzeit, in der 1808 der Erste Teil erscheint, erfahren wir aus den Selbstzeugnissen kaum etwas über den Stand der Arbeit, abgesehen von einer für "Dichtung und Wahrheit" bestimmten Über…sichtsskizze über die ersten vier Akte des Zweiten Teils. Erst nach dem Eintritt Eckermanns in den Goetheschen Lebenskreis fließen die Quellen reichlicher, betrachtet Goethe den "Faust" als sein "Haupt-geschäft", wie er die Förderung und Abrundung des Zweiten Teils seiner Dichtung seit Sommer 1827 in den Tagebüchern bezeichnet, als sein Vermächtnis, das er nach dem Abschluß einsiegelt wie ein Testament; es wird der Welt im ersten Band der Nachgelassenen Werke noch im Todesjahr des Dichters eröffnet. Einen wie reichen Befund die Äußerungen Goethes auch bieten, sie lassen doch viele Fragen offen. Sie unterrichten uns über das mähliche Reifen des Werkes in der Schiller-, vor allem aber in der Eckermann-Zeit und geben mitunter auch Rückblicke auf frühere Wachstumsabschnitte - es bleibt immer zu beklagen, daß der vierte Band der Eckermannschen Gespräche, der ausschließlich den "Faust" zum Gegenstand haben sollte, infolge des Todes des Getreuen in der Planung verblieben ist. Die Ursprünge aber liegen im Ungewissen, und die Anfänge verlieren sich ins Dunkle. Wir erfahren nichts Genaues über die Konzeption, den unmittelbaren Anstoß, der das Werk auslöste, nichts darüber, wie sich die trübe Welt und der blutige Ausgang des Prozesses gegen eine Frankfurter Kindesmörderin zur Gretchen-Tragödie läuterte und wie und wann Gelehrten-und Gretchen-Tragödie zu einer Einheit zusammenschössen. Darüber schweigen auch die übrigen Zeugnisse, und dies alles wie vieles andre noch verharrt im Geheimnis der dichterischen Zeugung. Wir müssen uns mit dem Ungesagten abfinden und können lediglich der Vermutung Raum geben. Man darf von den hier mitgeteilten Zeugnissen nur geringe philologische Einzelaufschlüsse über das äußere Wachsen des Werkes erwarten; dazu reichen die Goethe-Aussagen nicht aus, und wer diesen Fragen nachgehen will, der sei auf die Sammlungen Pniowers und Grafs und der Faust-Paralipomena sowie auf die erläuternden Faust-Ausgaben und die Kommentare verwiesen. Deutlicher erschließt sich das innere Wachstum der Dichtung, wenn auch manches im Inkommensurablen und gelegentlich im Widersprüchlichen verbleibt; dem Leser ist zudem Gelegenheit genug gegeben, "sich über sich selber hinauszumuten".
