Add to basketThe copy of the dust-jacket illustrator of this scarce work on Kuwait and Bahrain. Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson (d.1980) served in the Mesopotamia Campaign in WW1 and stayed as an intelligence agent/date dealer, living in Basra with Margaret Joy Dowson. As part of the British political scene in the Gulf they would certainly have known the Dicksons and Margaret Joy would have been the ideal person to ask for an illustration of a date-palm with appears on the front cover. Someone has clearly taken the trouble to preserve the dust-jacket but cutting and pasting the salient portions to the first pages inside. Violet Dickson spent twenty-eight years in Arabia, along with her husband, Lt.-Col. Dickson. This afforded her the opportunity to gather botanical specimens for Kew, as well as mammal specimens for the British Museum and Smithsonian Institute. The standard work on the subject. Scarce. First edition; 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); ownership stamps to endpapers, dust-jacket cover and blurb pasted to free endpaper and half-title with manuscript captions, errata slip; publisher's original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, a touch of rubbing, a very good copy; 144 pp. Provenance: Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson and Margaret Joy Dowson (stamps).…

She stayed in Kuwait after her husband's death in 1959 until the Iraqi invasion in 1990, becoming a prominent member of the expatriate community. Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "With the author's compliments. Violet Dickson. Kuwait 17.5.71." This detailed autobiography describes meeting with Ibn Saud and societal changes brought about by the oil boom. Dickson (1896-1991) was married to Harold Dickson, the British political agent in Bahrain (1919-20) and Kuwait (1929-36) and subsequently an employee of the Kuwait Oil Company. She also published The Wild Flowers of Kuwait and Bahrain in 1955. The desert flower, Horwoodia dicksoniae, is named after her. Below Dickson's inscription is a second: "Susan: and mine, in the hope that when your book on your years in Kuwait is published - based on your letters home - you will let me have a complimentary copy. Add to basketFirst edition, third impression. 8 leaves of plates (with 16 photographic illustrations) and 5 maps in the text. 8vo. Fine original orange cloth, silver lettering to spine, in a near fine dust-jacket; minor creases and dents to extremities of jacket. Small split in textblock before plates but structurally sound. 335pp. London, George Allen & Unwin, A fascinating autobiography describing Dickson's long residence in Kuwait. It is one of the best memoirs of life there in the decades just before and after the discovery of oil. The author grew up in Lincolnshire and found herself working for the Marseilles branch of a British bank after the First World War. It was there that she met the young soldier-diplomat H.R.P. Dickson, who was en route to the Persian Gulf via India. A surprise proposal followed and Violet spent the first decade of married life in Iraq, India and Iran. The Dicksons moved to Kuwait in 1929 when Harold was appointed British Political Agent. The majority of the book covers his residency (up to 1936), later employment with the Kuwait Oil Company (1936-39), Kuwait during WWII and Violet's continuation there after Harold's passing in 1959. Her writing on those decades is both a personal account of a remarkably adventurous marriage, and a sensitive exposition of Kuwait's modern transformation.…
