Among the nutritional factors related to neural tube defects, in addition to Folate, low level of serum zinc has been described by many authors in the recent time. This study w…as conducted with the objective of finding the relationship of serum zinc with NTD in a Bangladeshi population. This case control study was conducted between in BSMMU, Dhaka. Newborns with neural tube defects and their mothers were considered as cases and normal babies and their mothers were taken as controls. Mothers taking zinc supplements in any part of pregnancy were excluded from the study. Venous blood specimens from mothers and newborns were obtained at or within one week of delivery. Serum zinc concentration was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Low level of serum zinc in the mothers and newborns were found to be associated with neural tube defects, which is consistent with some other studies. However, it is also evident that some other factors (maternal parity etc) could significantly be associated with this defect. To confirm these findings, a further study with a larger sample size is recommended. 60 pp. Englisch.

Onder de voedingsfactoren die verband houden met neurale buisdefecten is, naast foliumzuur, de afgelopen tijd door veel auteurs een laag serumzinkgehalte beschreven. Dez…e studie werd uitgevoerd met als doel de relatie tussen serumzink en NTD te vinden in een Bengaalse bevolking. Deze case-control studie werd uitgevoerd tussen in BSMMU, Dhaka. Pasgeborenen met neurale buisdefecten en hun moeders werden als gevallen beschouwd en normale baby's en hun moeders werden als controles beschouwd. Moeders die zinksupplementen gebruikten tijdens een deel van de zwangerschap, werden uitgesloten van het onderzoek. Veneuze bloedmonsters van moeders en pasgeborenen werden op of binnen een week na de bevalling verkregen. De serumzinkconcentratie werd bepaald door middel van atoomabsorptiespectrofotometrie. Een laag serumzinkgehalte bij moeders en pasgeborenen bleek geassocieerd te zijn met neurale buisdefecten, wat consistent is met enkele andere onderzoeken. C…ette étude a été menée dans le but de trouver la relation entre le zinc sérique et les ATN dans une population bangladaise. Cette étude cas-témoins a été menée entre le BSMMU, Dhaka. Les nouveau-nés présentant des anomalies du tube neural et leurs mères ont été considérés comme des cas et les bébés normaux et leurs mères ont été pris comme témoins. Les mères prenant des suppléments de zinc à n'importe quel stade de la grossesse ont été exclues de l'étude. Des échantillons de sang veineux de mères et de nouveau-nés ont été prélevés à ou dans la semaine suivant l'accouchement. La concentration sérique de zinc a été déterminée par spectrophotométrie d'absorption atomique. Un faible taux de zinc sérique chez les mères et les nouveau-nés était associé à des anomalies du tube neural, ce qui est cohérent avec certaines autres études. Cependant, il est également évident que certains autres facteurs (parité maternelle, etc.) pourraient être associés de manière significative à ce défaut. Pour confirmer ces résultats, une étude plus approfondie avec un échantillon plus large est recommandée.
