Blindstamped Cloth. Condition: Very Good. N.d., circa 1860. Oblong 8vo, 21 by 30 cm. 30 hand-colored plates of Paris and its surroundings. Basically two series of plates combined, the first 24 drawn by Collette or Eichot and published by Imp. Marie, with Dutot and R. Lebrasseur given as "editeurs", and the second group of six based on Deroy paintings and published by Lemercier. The collection of plates in this album were semi-standard, with the binding itself and its title, "Paris sous Napoleon III", being used for similar but not necessarily identical groups of plates. 30 plates in all was something of a standard number, with some sets having a smaller number, but obviouslly, the binding is tailor-made for 30. Sets could be hand-colored or uncolored, with colored plates the more desirable. It also appears quite common to combine plates from the Collette/Eichot series, which are numbered 1 to 24, with Lemercier plates, which are numbered but from the non-chronological numbering in this and other sets, selected more randomly to reach a complement of 30. Plates are generally of the better known, more magnificent sights in and around Paris, with typically people, horses, coaches and other horse-drawn vehicles providing additional interest and perspective. Condition: some, not all, plates have darker age toning around the edges, along with some foxing and thumb smudges. In our judgment, half a dozen plates are marred by the soiling and/or ripples in the paper, with the other plates clean or with non-disconcerting amounts of soil issues. The binding itself has some wear, including rubbing, some fading of the color, and the like, but remains more than passable and even attractive.

Reliure de l'époque de demi-chagrin maroquiné vert-bronze, dos à nerfs orné de filets gras à froid, filet en pointillés dorés sur les nerfs, doubles caissons d'encadrement dorés, larges fleurons dorés, titre doré, filet et filet en pointillés dorés en tête et queue, tranches mouchetées. Edition originale de cette exhaustive étude consacrée à l'Exposition de 1878 ; agrémentée d'une abondante iconographie. Exemplaire - agréablement relié - complet de sa grande planche dépliante. Le palais du Trocadéro aussi appelé Palais de pierre est construit pour l'occasion par l' architecte Gabriel Davioud et l'ingénieur Jules Bourdais. Les statues des Continents qui ornent alors la façade du palais du Trocadero, ont été depuis lors réinstallées devant le musée d'Orsay. Au rang des principales attractions : la tête de la statue de la liberté est exposée au Champ-de-Mars, l'aquarium est aménagé sur le site abandonné d'anciennes carrières de pierre à bâtir, situé à flanc de la colline de Chaillot, l'inventeur Henri Giffard construit un ballon captif de 25 000 m3, capable d?emporter 40 à 50 passagers. (On dit alors que ce ballon, situé aux Tuileries, fit voler en deux mois autant de personnes que depuis le début de l?aérostation.). Parallèlement au ballon captif, la machine servant à produire le gaz permet de gonfler de nombreux ballons libres, permettant des ascensions variées, parfois par groupes (jusqu?à trois ballons simultanément). C'est d'ailleurs l'une des attractions phare de l'exposition où 35 000 personnes volèrent ainsi dans la nacelle. Enfin, et pour l'anecdote, la maison de Champagne Mercier expose un foudre de vin de Champagne d'une contenance de soixante-quinze mille bouteilles. Ce tonneau est pourtant battu en gigantisme par celui de la délégation de l'Autriche-Hongrie. Lequel contient cent-mille litres ! Angles et coupes élimés. Quelques claires rousseurs dans le corps d'ouvrage. Déchirure en marge gauche de la planche dépliante. Du reste, belle condition.

Raro foglio che raccoglie sei vedute relative alla città di Genova. Sono raffigurate una veduta Generale, veduta della Darsena, veduta del Palazzo Doria, veduta dell'Acqua Verde, veduta generale presa da levante e veduta di S. Theodora. Incisione diffile da reperirsi completa in quanto spesso ritagliata per illustrare guide locali.

Reliure demi chagrin vert, dos lisse muet. Reliure légèrement usée sinon bon état.Les vues sont lithographiées en forme de médaillon. Vues d'Orléans, de la source du Loiret, du chateau de Chambord, d'Amboise, de Blois, de Tours, de Chenonceaux , de Saumur.Les planches sont lithographiées par ou d'après A. Deroy, certaines comportent un cachet à froid du Libraire Gatineau représentant la cathédrale d'Orléans.Quelques rares rousseurs sinon planches en très bel état. Alphonse Gatineau est né le 16 août 1801 à Orléans ; son père était perruquier. Il a été représentant pour Firmin-Didot jusqu'en 1830, puis il a épousé en 1831 une libraire d'Orléans.Sa femme lui transfère son brevet de libraire le 3 mars 1834 (il le cèdera à son fils en septembre 1862) et il obtient un brevet d'imprimeur en lettres le 5 mai 1836, pour imprimer des livres religieux et des classiques pour les établissement d'enseignement religieux. Il cède ce brevet en décembre 1847 "pour des raisons de santé et de famille", mais le reprend le 16 octobre 1848. Il quitte Orléans en mars 1853 et cède son brevet d'imprimeur en lettres à Ambroise Eugène Chenu le 28 avril 1856 ; son brevet de lithographe est annulé en 1859 : le commissaire enquêteur constate -et sa femme le confirme- qu'il n'avait jamais acheté le matériel nécessaire, n'ayant repris de Perdrix que du petit matériel.Ce qui explique peut-être pourquoi certaines lithographies contenues dans ce volume sont au nom de Becquet Frères à Paris. Bound in contemporary red half morocco, raised gilt spine. boards covered with marbled paper, marbled endpapers, spickled edges. Very fine copy without any stains or foxing ( unusually fine). This album can take its place among the highlights of French 19th c. periodical illustrations. It was produced when the art of woodcut illustrations had reached a virtuosic climax. A few years later, at the end of the 1860's woodcuts were replaced by zincographic reproduction methods, later by photographical methods.The album is divided in 9 sections : Views from Italy ; Spain ; France ; Africa ; Russia ; England. And Portraits (with a double page plate of the Garnier opera, under construction) ; humor ( cartoons ) ; Parisians; army life. It gives a fine survey of French iconographic intrests. All the best illustrators of the period are represented (see names above). Very fine stainless copy.

Daundenarde (atelier de "Le Monde illustré"), veduta panoramica a volo d'uccello del confine franco germanico con segnati, in stampatello, i nomi delle principali città dei due paesi, da quelle in prossimità del confine a quelle più in lontananza. Sotto il titolo (al margine inferiore) si reca la seguente avvertenza: " Le spectateur se suppose placé à 64 kilomètres au dessus de Paris, ayant la Suisse à droite, la Belgique à gauche, et Berlin en face". La guerra franco - prussiana fu combattuta dal luglio 1870 al maggio 1871, tra il secondo Impero francese (e dopo la caduta del regime, dalla terza Repubblica francese) e il Regno di Prussia, sostenuto dalla Confederazione tedesca del Nord e alleato con gli stati tedeschi del sud di Baden, Baviera e Wurttemberg. Il conflitto segnò l'esplodere della tensione tra le due potenze, andata accrescendosi in seguito al fallimento del progetto di Napoleone III di annessione del Lussemburgo, evento che causò la fine di un rapporto relativamente bilanciato con la Prussia di Otto von Bismark. I contrasti si erano fatti più accesi a causa della crescente influenza, per nulla tollerata da Parigi, esercitata dalla Prussia sugli stati tedeschi a sud del fiume Meno, appartenenti alla ex Confederazione germanica, e del ruolo guida esercitato dalla Prussia all'interno della Confederazione della Germania del Nord, creata nel 1867 dopo la vittoria prussiana nella guerra contro l'Impero austriaco. La guerra franco - prussiana fu il più importante conflitto combattuto in Europa a cavallo tra le guerre napoleoniche e la prima guerra mondiale, e si concluse con la completa vittoria della Prussia e dei suoi alleati. La conseguenza più rilevante fu la creazione dell'Impero tedesco, mentre la sconfitta francese determinò anche la fine del secondo Impero di Napoleone III e, con il crollo di questo, la temporanea subalternità del ruolo francese alle altre potenze del consesso europeo.
