Paperback. Condition: Sehr gut. 336 S.: Ill. Lediglich der Einband ist leicht berieben. Sonst aber ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. Es befindet sich Zeitungsartikel zwischen den Seiten. / Only the dust jacket is slightly rubbed. Otherwise a good and clean copy. There is newspaper article between the pages. - The exhibition includes drawings by such famous artists as Rembrandt, Piranesi, Goya, and Blake. But over and above their inherent interest, we hope that this selection will give visitors to the exhibition the opportunity to experience the different aspects of this artistic idiom. A freehand drawing, a design, a sketch of some pictorial detail, the plan of an architectural project-all must be perceived and distinguished as different expressions, different manifestations of the art of drawing. Here we recognize the extent to which drawing can, on the one hand, be the vivid rendering of visual qualities -as well as a mirror of subjective fantasies -and, on the other, the expression of an intellectual outlook of more general significance. Even musical notation, the handwritten score, which is subject to fixed rules, can convey a form of expression comparable to that of a drawing. This can be impressively demonstrated with examples from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, or Stravinsky. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. From Engravings (illustrator). First Edition. Boston: M.M. Ballou, 1855. First Edition. The May 5, 1855 issue, Volume VIII, No. 18, Whole No. 200. Numerous illustrations from engravings. Elephant folio size, sewn newsprint wraps, 16 pp. Very Good; some darkening, notably at front covers (see scan); some edge wear, and of course a bit of age-toning to the newsprint paper (not excessive), and not much else to point to here. See scans. High grade. Maturin Ballou's paper was quite supple, not at all fragile, and it shows. Sharp, healthy, well-preserved. This issue contains stories, articles, and / or the diverse and now somewhat legendary engravings - regarding as follows: The Uniform Overcoat of the First Regiment of the Massachusetts Voluntary Militia, text with one large engraving; The King and the Cobbler - A Romance of Ancient Persia (continuing) by Austin C. Burdick; Venice and Amsterdam (text and two large engravings); the eruption of Mount Pelee in Martinique (text and one engraving); My Cousin From the Country, by M.A. Denison ; a lengthy piece on Mackinaw, Michigan, with four impressive engravings; A Triplet of Gems, by Caroline A. Soule; "Pliny Miles, the Traveller", short piece with a portrait engraving; Antioch, Syria, text with one large engraving; Scenes in New Orleans, text and two handsome engravings; a full-rear-cover engraving, "Gods and Goddesses of Grecian Mythology"; and of course a number of short editorials, news pieces, poems, and ads. Please see all scans. Maturin Ballou's 16-page newsprint periodical was already a piece of American history when he, as managing editor of Gleason's Pictorial, bought that - the first successful illustrated weekly newspaper in America - from owner Frederick Gleason in 1855. An early issue under this name. lLng1.

A charming and increasingly scarce mid-19th century scientific work, A Compendium of Astronomy Containing the Elements of the Science, Familiarly Explained and Illustrated by Denison Olmsted, A.M., published by Collins & Brother, New York, 1848. This collectible volume remains in very good condition for its age, offering both historical appeal and enduring readability. The original binding shows expected signs of age and handling, with light wear concentrated at the head and tail of the spine, including a few small tears and minor bumping. The spine itself remains fully intact and stable. The interior carries the signature of a previous owner dated 1850 on the front endpaper. There is some ink bleed-through affecting a few pages, though it does not obscure or interfere with the printed text. Moderate foxing is present throughout, as commonly found in works of this period, adding to its authentic antique character. The binding shows a few slightly loose areas, but all pages remain present and securely attached. Importantly, aside from the early ownership inscription, the text block is free from additional writing, markings, or highlighting. A wonderful example of early American scientific literature and is ideal for collectors of antique astronomy texts or 19th-century educational works. (BR) Shelf 349.
