Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an unprecedented glimpse into the archival practices of the French royal court during the Middle Ages. Written in the late 14th century by royal official Gerard de Montaigu, it details his efforts to organize and catalog the vast collection of documents known as the Trà sor des chartes, the forerunner to the French National Archives. De Montaigu's work was monumental, as the Trà sor des chartes held a treasure trove of royal charters, diplomatic correspondence, and other documents, including feudal contracts, land surveys, and financial accounts. The author describes the physical state of each document, its material composition, and its script and language, providing invaluable insights into the production and use of written records in medieval France. Beyond its practical utility as a tool for navigating the Trà sor des chartes, the book also sheds light on the evolving role of record keeping in the late medieval period. As royal power expanded and the French monarchy sought to assert its authority over an increasingly complex and literate society, the systematic organization and preservation of documents became essential. The author's reflections on the challenges and rewards of his work as a royal archivist offer a unique perspective on the intellectual and administrative culture of the French court. His insights are all the more valuable given the scarcity of surviving sources from this period. Through his efforts to preserve and organize the written heritage of the French monarchy, de Montaigu played a pivotal role in shaping the historical record that has come down to us today.
