Ephraim Deinard (1846 Sasmakken, Latvia - 1930 United States) was a prolific Hebrew writer who published more than fifty books and pamphlets (so…me under the pseudonym "Adir") on travel, biography, bibliography, history, religion, etc. He is notable for his bibliographic work, cataloging old manuscripts and books and for his role as a polemicist. He was also one of the greatest Hebrew bookman of all time. In his youth he traveled a great deal, collecting ancient manuscripts and books in many countries, and then established a bookshop in Odessa. In 1897 he tried unsuccessfully to found an agricultural settlement in Nevada (U. S.A.). An active Zionist, he settled in Palestine in 1913 where he investigated the possibilities of Jewish settlement. After being expelled by the Turks in 1916 he returned to the United States and continued his bibliographical work. His two most noteworthy bibliographical works are Or Mayer: Catalogue of the Old Hebrew Manuscripts and Printed Books of the Library of the Hon. Mayer Sulzberger of Philadelphia (1896) and Koheleth America (1926), a listing of Hebrew books published in America from 1735 to 1926. The first part of the latter work contains essays on the state of Hebrew literature in America, which are written in his unadorned, but typically acerbic, style. Abraham (Avraham) ben Samuel Firkovich (Sept. 27, 1786 Lutsk, Volhynia, then part of the Russian Empire, now Ukraine - June 7, 1874 Cufut Qale, Crimea, Russian occupied Ukraine) was a Karaite writer, archaeologist, ancient manuscripts collector, Karaite Hakham (clergyman), and a forger. He moved to Lithuania, and later settled in Cufut Qale, Crimea. Gabriel Firkovich of Troki was his son-in-law. Firkovich was born into a Crimean Karaite farming family. In 1818 he served the local Crimean Karaite communities as a religious leader, moved to the city of Eupatoria in Crimea, then, in 1822, he moved to the Karaite community in Gozleve, and he was appointed a community leader, in 1825. Together with the Karaite noble Simha Babovich, he sent memoranda to the Czar, with proposals to relieve Karaites from the heavy taxes imposed on the Jewish community. In 1828 he moved to Berdichev, where he met many Hasidism and learned more about their interpretations of Jewish Scriptures based on the Talmud and rabbinic tradition. The encounter with Rabbinical Jews brought Firkovich into conflict with them. He published a book, "Massah and Meribah" (Yevpatoria, 1838) which argued against the Rabbinic Judaism and the halakha. In 1830 he visited Jerusalem, where he collected many Jewish manuscripts. On his return he remained for two years in Constantinople, as a teacher in the Karaite community there. He then went to Crimea and organized a society to publish old Karaite works, of which several appeared in Yevpatoria (Koslov) with comments by him. In 1838 he was the teacher of the children of Sima Babovich, the head of the Russian Crimean Karaites, who a year later recommended him to Count Vorontzov and to the Historical Society of Odessa as a suitable man to send to collect material for the history of the Crimean Karaites. In 1839, Firkovich began excavations in the ancient cemetery of Cufut Qale, and he unearthed many old tombstones, claiming that some of them dated from the first centuries of the common era. The following two years were spent in travels through the Caucasus, where he ransacked the genizot. .
