The binding is tight and the pages are clean, except that the back of the cover and the page facing it (the half-title) have a glue stain and previous owner's information scratched out. Cover price $1.50.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 12mo. Perfect-bound card covers. Flat, uncreased copy in very good condition with hint of wear at top of spine and bottom, and evidence of light sunning to front. This landmark publication was the result of a fruitful creative partnership between photographer Roy DeCarava and writer Langston Hughes. Scarce in this condition.

A moving and beautiful book. 98 pp. Fair condition - usual rubbing and some toning to the covers, small slit across spine to front cover, not affecting the binding.

BOOK CONDITION: The book is also near fine with sharp corners and bright lettering on very clean covers, the binding was tight and the interior is very clean and unmarked. First edition thus. Hardcover. 112 pages. A larger and more accessible edition than the previous two editions. A classic collaboration that features text by Langston Hughes and black and white images by Roy DeCarava. A clean near fine in cloth boards in a very good plus dust jacket with some small edge tears, minor wear and some slight sunning to the spine. Signed by DeCarava on the title page and with a laid in vintage receipt from Witkin gallery. The original edition was featured in both Parr & Badger v1, 242 and Roth 138-139. A nice association copy.

Acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCaravaâs images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). Hailed as "an important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a pacy, cinematic style. It is also a book that had more impact in its cheaper paperback edition, since, radically, Hughesâ text begins on the cover" (Parr & Badger II:242). "The book won two awards, received critical acclaim in The New York Times Book Review sold out its first edition, and was reprinted many times. It is one of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published" (Roth, 138).

Spine is sunned and back cover has some discoloration. Binding is tight. Pages are clean and free of marks. A previous owner's name written at the head of the half-title page, in pen- no other marks. Born in New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1919, Roy DeCarava came of age during the Harlem Renaissance, when artistic activity and achievement among African Americans flourished across the literary, musical, dramatic, and visual arts. DeCarava did not take up photography until the late 1940s, after working in painting and making prints for the posters division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). He used his camera to produce striking studies of everyday black life in Harlem, capturing the varied textures of the neighborhood and the creative efflorescence of the Harlem Renaissance. Resisting explicit politicization, DeCarava used photography to counter what he described as "black people, not being portrayed in a serious and artistic way." Dr. Gomes was a professor at Howard University for 49 years in sociology and criminology. He was also a former Olympic athlete, representing Guyana in the 1960 Rome summer Olympics. Besides his scholarly work, Gomes was active in the black liberation movement. He had an impressive and deep collection of black art, historical advertising and iconography that spoke of the passage of black people and how they sought to record their life stories. His collection spanned from slavery, to antebellum life, to Jim Crow, to the Harlem Renaissance, to sport, to the civil rights movement.
