Les manières de nommer la maladie, qu'elles restent à l'intérieur de la langue latine ou qu'elles soient des transpositions, des calques sémantiques ou des emprunts du grec, n'intéressent pas seulement les philologues. Elles correspondent à un certain découpage de la réalité nosologique qui n'est à l'évidence plus le nôtre. Elles permettent donc d'appréhender, par cette difficulté même, le caractère relatif des noms donnés à la maladie, en fonction du potentiel linguistique et du savoir scientifique, mais aussi de paramètres sociaux, des mentalités et des représentations anthropologiques.
