Le point clé de l'administration traditionnelle de médicaments est que le niveau sanguin de l'agent doit rester entre une valeur maximale, qui peut représenter un niveau toxique, et une valeur minimale, en dessous de laquelle le médicament n'est plus efficace, ce qui peut être facilement réalisé par un système d'administration de médicaments contrôlé.
