The rare original was written as a letter to Henry Ellis read December 13th, 1832; and, first published in 1834 as Dracontia or Observations On Circle and Serpent Worship. From John Bathurst Deane, author of: "The Worship of the Se…rpent Throughout the World - Attesting the Temptation and Fall of Man by the Instrumentality of a Serpent Tempter." In this treatise, Deane presented a full investigative and studied treatise into related patterns in cultures across the world. This is a letter or addendum to the highly illuminating 1833 study of snake worship, especially the serpent in the Book of Genesis that convinced Eve to eat of the fruit of 'The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,' and then convinced Adam to do the same. A number of Gnostic texts and others referenced, expound on the idea of knowledge, and how the serpent gave this to humans. Deane includes mythical reptilian creatures such as dragons and the leviathan. The theme of this veneration is traced from Babylonia, East and West, through Persia, Hindûstan - Persian name for India, China, Mexico, Britain, Scandinavia, Italy, Illyricum - the western Balkans, Thrace, Greece, Asia Minor - Turkish, and Phoenicia - Lebanon area of the Levant. Thick stiff pictorial wraps with cover and spine titles, fine. Pages fine. Several pages of photos throughout. Thick light yellow endpapers. Sewn binding for longer life with matte laminated multi-colour wraps. Printed on high quality aper, and professionally processed without altering original contents. From preface: "The deception of Eve by Satan, through the instrumentality of a serpent has ever been an object of ridicule with the profane, who, reading without reflection, or reflecting without reading, deem that a 'foolishness,' which they cannot understand; and that 'a stumbling block,' which they cannot eplain away. Thus faith has been shaken, by an incredulous sneer, which had defied the sophistry of the acutest sceptic; and Christians, who would have scorned to be argued out of their religion, have not been ashamed to be laughed out of it." Next: "Preliminary Observations on the fall of man. That man, in his present state of ignorance, infirmity, and wickedness, is not the Adam of God's hand - the similitude of his Creator - the being which he was when God 'Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, ' placed him in Paradise, and pronounced him 'good,' - is an observation not resulting from metaphysical research, but obvious to the most simple, unlettered mind." The author of this historical biography and descendent of Richard Deane, John Bathurst Deane, was a curate, antiquary, and author of such titles as "The Worship of the Serpent Traced Throughout the World" (1833); "Observations on Dracontia" (1833); "On the Church and Chapters" (1840); "The Life of Richard Deane, Admiral and General of the Forces under Cromwell" (1870), and an unfinished manuscript, "Roman Legions in Britain". He belonged to the Society of Antiquaries and its Council and also to the Antiquarians' Club. He was one of the founders, in 1843, of the British Archaeological Association and, in 1844, of the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. His daughter Eleanor was the mother of P. G. Wodehouse. xii, 718 pages. Dorothea Mary Roby Thorpe, or Lady Charnwood, married Godfrey Rathbone Benson, 1st Baron Charnwood (6 November 1864 3 February 1945) in 1897. Baron Charnwood was an English author, academic, Liberal politician and philanthropist. Lady Charnwood, who presented this book to Nottingham University, was instrumental in jump starting what became Aston Martin motor cars as Bamford & Martin which was going bankrupt in the early twenties. In 1924 she acquired the fledgling brand and put her son John Benson on the board. Bamford & Martin got into financial difficulty again in 1925 and Martin was forced to sell the company. Later that year, Bill Renwick, Augustus Bertelli and investors including Lady Charnwood took control. They renamed it Aston Martin Motors and moved to the former Whitehead Aircraft Ltd.
