Het vervaardigen van barakken voor de Duitse troepen en dertig schijnvliegtuigen (om de geallieerde piloten te misleiden…gedurende de bombardementen) brak de Kortrijkse industrieel zuur op. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd hij veroordeeld wegens economische collaboratie. In 1946, net voor de uitspraak, schreef Jozef De Coene zijn visie neer. Die tekst wordt nu voor het eerst gepubliceerd. 0 g.

In 1846 werd hij tot Brits staatsburger genaturaliseerd. ** Kunsthandelaren zijn de kneusjes van de kunstgeschiedenis. Hun blazoen en reputatie zijn immers niet ongeschonden. Niet onterecht. Maar hun leven is wel spannend, vindingrijk, interessant, uitdagend, besprenkeld met champagne en schoonheid, maar ook intriges en gesjoemel. Zo is het ook voor Ernest Gambart (1814-1902), geboren in Kortrijk maar een kunstspeler op de Europese en internationale markt. Een kleurrijk manspersoon, laverend tussen kunst en vertier. Zesenvijftig is hij wanneer hij in 1871 met pensioen gaat. Niet dat hij cht met rust gaat: hij reist over en weer tussen Spa, Nice, Londen, Parijs, kuuroorden, badplaatsen, operahuizen, theaters? zelfs nog even zijn geboortestad Kortrijk. Het Ch teau d?Alsa in Spa ? ook wel de Villa-Soleil des Grands Artistes gedoopt ? en de villa Les Palmiers in Nice zijn de places to be om te netwerken. En om zich te amuseren. Met de talrijke internationale eretekens en als ?ereconsul-generaal van Spanje? staat hij te blinken op foto?s.
